FIRST EDITION 4to. hardback rebound in quarter maroon morocco with black title label, gilt and blind-stamped decoration to spine and marbled boards. New endpapers. xvi, 56pp. (Sketch of the Life of Handel), 139pp. (Commemoration of Handel plus Appendix) plus Advertisement and Errata. Of the 7 plates called for, Plates I, III and V are missing, Plates II and IV are photocopies (on heavy cream paper to match original pages), Plates VI and VII are original engravings but trimmed very closely, without captions, and pasted in to blanks where called for. The original engraving of Plate IV has been trimmed into an oval and pasted in to recto of frontispiece which is another photocopy, this time of the Westminster Commemorative plaque, not called for. And there is another original engraving, also not called for, of the Plan of the Orchestra, and Disposition of the Band with tissue guard. In spite of these anomalies, the text appears complete and, apart from a couple of repaired closed tears and light foxing, is in excellent condition. There are some tiny pencil notes from a previous bookseller to the front pastedown and very occasional pencil marks and notes in the text. Illustrations aside, a VERY GOOD COPY.
