Royal 8vo. hardbacks in original publisher's dark blue cloth with gilt titles to spines and silver gilt titles and vignette illustrations to upper boards. t.e.g. Volume I: xlviii, 372pp., illustrated with tissue-guarded portrait frontispiece, 6 tissue-guarded colour plates, 107 b/w plates (some with 2 images) and 11 b/w diagrams in text. Volume II: xv, 419pp., Indexed, illustrated with tissue-guarded frontispiece, 6 tissue-guarded colour plates, 85 b/w plates (some with up to 6 images), 38 b/w illustrations in the text, 2 folding b/w panoramas and 3 large folding colour maps in pocket at rear. Small bookplate of Will Watson Armstrong (1st Baron Armstrong, British benefactor) to front pastedown of both volumes. No other markings or inscriptions. Slight creasing to panorama, otherwise it and the three maps in very good condition. Mild tanning to endpapers and a few pale spots of foxing to untrimmed foredges. Spines slightly and uniformly faded with light wear to tops and bases. Silver gilt vignette illustrations to upper boards lightly rubbed. A VERY GOOD SET.
