FIRST EDITION 4 Volumes. 4to. (approx. 28 x 21cm) hardbacks, quarter bound in original 18th century brown calf with raised bands, black title labels, gilt, to spines, and marbled boards. Pages untrimmed. Text in double columns. Volume I; xi, [13], 680pp., viii, illustrated with engraved frontispiece, 15 plates and 8 folding charts (title page a little creased, a few closed tears to hinges of charts but not affecting images). Volume II: viii, [4], 732pp., illustrated with engraved frontispiece and 73 plates, some folding (large closed tear to Plan of the Island of Goree and first Map of River Gambra rather creased). Volume III: vi, [4], 605pp., illustrated with engraved frontispiece and 58 plates, some folding. Volume IV: xii, [3], 751pp., [42 Index], illustrated with engraved frontispiece and 71 of 73 plates, some folding (lacking Death of the Last Chinese Emperor of the Ming and Map of Tibet). A clean set with no previous owners' markings or inscriptions. Untrimmed edges a little dusty and a few pages have creases to corners. Occasional light foxing and soiling, mainly to prelims. Small embroidery thread label stuck to foot of p.514 of Vil. I, not affecting text. Bindings all a trifle short with untrimmed lower edge protruding by up to 1cm. Spines and boards rather worn and scuffed with some loss to top of Vol. I and a few minor cracks to hinges although bindings still good and strong. Overall a GOOD+ SET with somewhat shabby exterior (possibly a candidate for a fine rebind?).
