(approx. 27 x 18cm) dark brown clothbound hardbacks with decorative gilt titles and decorations to spines and upper boards, and blind-embossed decoration to upper and lower boards. Vol. I has prospectus bound in where title should be. (Half and title pages bound at end of Vol. IX along with the Preface). 1022 and 1172pp. over the 9 volumes (indicating the usual binding in 2 volumes). Each volume has a number of tissue-guarded steel-engraved plates at the front along with a total of 863 wood engravings through the text of the 9 volumes. Each volume also has an 8pp. Publisher's List at end. Clean set with no previous ownership inscriptions or annotation. Foxing to edges and occasionally throughout, heaviest to first few p[ages and to steel engravings. Light rubbing, foxing and a few small marks to boards. Altogether a Handsome, informative set.
