FIRST EDITION Published as 2 Volumes, this copy bound in 9 Divisions. NB. THERE ARE 2 COPIES OF VOL. VI AND LACKING VOL. VII. Small 4to. (approx. 27 x 18cm) dark brown clothbound hardbacks with decorative gilt titles and decorations to spines and upper boards and blind-embossed decoration to upper and lower boards. Vol. I has prospectus bound in where title should be (half and title pages bound at end of Vol. IX along with the Preface. 1022 and 1172pp. over the 9 volumes (indicationg the usual binding in 2 volumes). Each volume has a number of tissue-guarded steel-engraved plates at the front along with a total of 863 wood engravings through the text of the 9 volumes. Each volume also has an 8pp. Publisher's List at end. Volume I has pencil inscription to front pastedown. All other volumes clean with no previous owners' markings or inscriptions. Vol. III has one gather of text missing at front (pages 423-430). Occasional light foxing throughout, heavier to steel engravings and prelims. Tops and bases of spine somewhat worn with light rubbing and edgewear to boards. Altogether a Handsome, informative set, even with faults.
